Since the inception of our Republic, esteemed educational institutions and dedicated educators have played a pivotal role in shaping the American intellect, inspiring generations to reach for the American Dream. This National Charter Schools Week, my Administration reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding American charter schools, promoting school choice, and upholding the inviolable right of every parent to guide their children’s educational journey.
Since the launch of the first American public charter school in 1992, these institutions have opened doors for countless children, particularly those from low-income and urban backgrounds, enabling them to thrive and realize their inherent potential, unaffected by their financial circumstances or postal codes. Currently, over 8,000 charter schools operate nationwide, empowering parents to select the educational path best suited for their children. Evidence shows that students in charter schools are excelling in math and reading, and in most states, the growth of charter school enrollment is outpacing the increase in the school-aged population.
As President, I remain unwavering in my commitment to fostering choice, opportunity, and innovation within American classrooms. Since assuming office, I proudly enacted an Executive Order aimed at enhancing educational freedom and opportunities for families. It is now the official stance of my Administration that parents possess the fundamental right to oversee their children’s education, upbringing, and moral development.
Last month, I also initiated measures to establish new educational and workforce development pathways for our Nation’s youth in the field of artificial intelligence, equipping our children with the necessary skills to become leaders in the digital era. Furthermore, I signed an order directing the Secretary of Education to undertake all necessary actions to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education, thereby restoring educational authority to the States, where it rightfully belongs. Our schools should serve as beacons of excellence for the global community, and my Administration will steadfastly uphold its commitment to empowering parents while ensuring safety, security, and rationality within our classrooms.
This National Charter Schools Week, we honor the remarkable achievements of charter school students, parents, teachers, and advocates. We reaffirm our commitment to educational freedom in all its forms, whether through homeschooling, charter schools, public institutions, or religious education. Above all, we recognize that exceptional schools pave the way for a bright, hopeful, and prosperous future for America.
