Prince George is gradually becoming aware of the remarkable future ahead of him, with royal insiders informing RadarOnline.com that the 12-year-old is increasingly cognizant of the duties, expectations, and personal sacrifices tied to his role as second in line to the British throne.
The eldest child of Prince William, 43, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, 44, marked his 12th birthday on July 22.
As the grandson of King Charles, 77, and great-grandson of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away at the age of 96 in September 2022, George holds a unique position within the Royal Family.
Historians and biographers have noted that the young prince’s understanding of his future responsibilities has deepened significantly since the death of the Queen, an event that altered the line of succession and brought the monarchy’s realities into sharper focus for him.
A palace source familiar with George’s upbringing by his parents, who are future monarchs, stated: “The passing of Queen Elizabeth was a significant moment in George’s realization of his identity and what lies ahead. Before, the concept of becoming king was distant and theoretical, discussed in books and family history, rather than something with immediate personal relevance. Her death highlighted the reality that the Crown is passed down through generations, and one day, these responsibilities will fall to him.”
This period led to vital family discussions about duty, service, and continuity. George started to understand that being in the direct line of succession involves much more than waving to crowds or participating in state events. He is learning that the role carries significant obligations, lifelong public scrutiny, and a commitment to prioritize the institution and nation over personal desires,” the insider continued.
“Simultaneously, William and Catherine have been very cautious about how this knowledge is imparted. Their main goal has always been to ensure George has as normal and joyful a childhood as possible. They don’t want him to feel the burden of the monarchy every moment. Instead, they have introduced his future in stages suitable for his age and maturity.”
The source added, “George is a smart young boy, and he asks questions. He comprehends much more than many might think. He knows his father will eventually be king and that he will succeed him. He is also becoming aware that the monarchy is affected by significant life events, including loss, succession, and change. This doesn’t mean he constantly worries about it, but it does indicate he is beginning to recognize the significance of his place in the family and history.”
“Those close to him believe there is a careful balance being maintained. He is being educated about his destiny and the immense sense of duty it entails, while also being encouraged to focus on things typical for any 12-year-old, like school, friendships, sports, and enjoying his childhood. The hope is that when greater responsibilities arrive, he will have developed a natural understanding of the role rather than feeling it has been suddenly imposed upon him.”
A royal expert mentioned that George is already “painfully conscious” of the position he will eventually inherit.
They commented: “Even though George knows his time as king is a long way off, he is still painfully aware of matters like death, succession, the responsibility of being a senior royal, and, ultimately, his destiny as a future king after his father.
“These are enormous concepts for a child to handle, and adults would struggle with them too, but his parents are ensuring a ‘gently, gently’ approach to help him manage his societal role.”
Following Queen Elizabeth’s passing, George appeared alongside senior family members at several major public events, including King Charles’ coronation in May 2023, where he served as a page boy.
Insiders revealed that George’s introduction to royal duties has been carefully handled over time.
One insider said: “Assigning George a visible role during the coronation was more significant than many realized at the time. It wasn’t just about including him in a historic family event or creating a memorable image. Those involved in planning viewed it as a crucial step in helping him understand the scale, symbolism, and responsibility associated with his place in the line of succession.
“Participating as a page boy allowed George to experience the event from within rather than merely watching it unfold. He witnessed firsthand the centuries-old traditions, the ceremony’s constitutional significance, and the immense public interest in the monarchy. Being told about these things is one thing, but standing in the middle of such an event and witnessing its magnitude is another.”
The source continued, “The coronation offered him a rare chance to comprehend the expectations that come with being a future king. He could observe the respect shown to the institution, the attention on his grandfather, and the role of duty in royal life. For a young boy who will one day inherit these responsibilities, that kind of experience is invaluable.”
“Those around him perceived it as an educational moment as much as a ceremonial one. It provided a glimpse into the future in a way that no explanation could. Rather than overwhelming him, it helped contextualize his future role and gave him a better understanding of the traditions and obligations he will be expected to uphold.”
“There was also a belief that involving George in such a historic event would help build his confidence over time. The experience let him take part in one of the most significant events of the modern monarchy while being supported by family, making it a natural and meaningful step in preparing him for future responsibilities.”
Beyond his royal education, George is nearing another important milestone, as a decision is expected soon regarding where he will continue his schooling later this year, coinciding with his 13th birthday.
There is speculation about whether he will follow William to Eton College or attend Marlborough College, Catherine’s former school.
Recent reports suggest Eton remains the leading candidate for the future king’s next educational step, with discussions about his arrival already underway.
An insider stated: “For now, however, George continues to balance the life of a schoolboy with the understanding that one day the crown will be his responsibility.”
