Prince Harry has openly discussed his complex relationship with the royal family, including his stepmother, Queen Camilla.
King Charles III and the late Princess Diana welcomed their second son, Harry, in September 1984, two years after Prince William was born. The couple’s marriage ended in 1992 amid rumors of infidelity. They officially divorced in 1996, just a year before Diana’s tragic death in a car accident in Paris.
In a well-known 1995 interview with the BBC’s Panorama, Diana candidly discussed her separation from Charles. She famously remarked about Camilla, who had been close to Charles since the 1970s: “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
In his 2023 memoir, Spare, Harry echoed his mother’s sentiments.
“My mother legendarily said there were three people in her marriage. But her math was off,” he wrote. “She left Willy and me out of the equation. We didn’t understand what was going on with her and Pa, certainly, but we intuited enough, we sensed the presence of the Other Woman, because we suffered the downstream effects.”
In a January 2023 interview on Good Morning America, Harry elaborated on his relationship with Camilla.
“We haven’t spoken for a long time. I love every member of my family, despite the differences,” he said. “When I see her, we’re perfectly pleasant with each other. She’s my stepmother. I don’t look at her as an evil stepmother. I see someone who married into this institution and [has] done everything she can to improve her own reputation and her own image, for her own sake.”
