William found the suggestion to change his wife’s name offensive, not only to her but also to her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, who had originally chosen her name and its spelling.
Prince Harry, 41, shared similar sentiments in his memoir Spare, noting that when the idea was proposed, William’s expression was “blank,” and ultimately, Kate retained her name.
A royal insider revealed: “For Catherine, the notion felt like an intrusion into something deeply personal—the name her parents had given her and by which she had been known all her life. Being asked to modify it, even slightly, seemed unusual and invasive, especially when the public already recognized her as Kate.
“William’s reaction was intense. He was furious, seeing the suggestion as unnecessary meddling and, more crucially, as a lack of respect towards the Middleton family.”
The source further explained, “In William’s view, altering his wife’s name to fit a tidy set of royal initials was entirely unacceptable. He was truly upset that anyone would consider rebranding something as fundamental as her name.”
