The Potential Role of Prince Andrew’s Daughters in Prince William’s Vision for the Monarchy
Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s two daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, are not currently working royals but do make occasional appearances on behalf of the crown. Beatrice serves as a Counsellor of State, authorized to act on behalf of Charles when he is abroad or unwell, while Eugenie was recently appointed a mentor for The King’s Foundation’s new 35 under 35 initiative. The question of whether they could step into more official roles remains contentious.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams expressed concerns about including Beatrice and Eugenie in more prominent roles, stating that it could bring the spotlight back to Prince Andrew and his controversies. Andrew was stripped of his royal duties following a widely criticized 2019 BBC Newsnight interview and faced allegations of sexual assault and scrutiny over his links to Jeffrey Epstein. Despite neither Beatrice nor Eugenie being implicated in any wrongdoing, their close ties to Andrew remain a sticking point for William’s vision.
However, royal biographer Ingrid Seward believes that the sisters could play a valuable role in William’s monarchy if given the chance. While Andrew has become a royal exile and hermit, making rare appearances at family events, Beatrice and Eugenie have the opportunity to contribute positively to the royal family.
It remains to be seen whether Beatrice and Eugenie will take on more official roles in the future, but their involvement could bring a fresh perspective and energy to the monarchy. As Prince William works to make the monarchy more youthful and relevant, the potential inclusion of Andrew’s daughters could be a step in the right direction.
