Princess Diana’s tragic death 27 years ago continues to be a topic of discussion, with her former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, shedding light on three crucial mistakes that he believes led to the fatal car crash. Wharfe, who served as Diana’s personal protection officer from 1988 to 1993, believes that these mistakes could have been avoided, potentially saving the beloved royal’s life.

The first mistake, according to Wharfe, was the decision to allow an intoxicated Henri Paul to drive the vehicle that fateful night. Wharfe firmly believes that if Diana’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, had taken charge and insisted on driving instead of Paul, the outcome could have been different. Unfortunately, Rees-Jones, who was at the “bottom of the pyramid” in terms of authority, was unable to make that call, ultimately resulting in tragedy.

Furthermore, Wharfe points out that Diana and her security team made a critical error by alienating local police and treating the media as enemies. He emphasizes the importance of establishing relationships with both groups, rather than viewing them as adversaries. Wharfe recalls his own experience of befriending the media during his time as a bodyguard, highlighting the significance of understanding their role in covering Diana’s public life.

The third and most significant mistake, in Wharfe’s opinion, was Diana’s decision to dismiss her Scotland Yard security detail following her split from Prince Charles in 1992. Despite his advice to maintain the security team for her safety, Diana opted to cut ties in pursuit of a new life. Wharfe laments the royal family’s complacency in allowing Diana to make this decision, noting that had the Queen insisted on retaining the security, Diana would have accepted it.

In a poignant recollection, Wharfe shares a conversation he had with Diana, urging her not to lose the Scotland Yard security even after his departure. He reminds her that she will always be Diana, Princess of Wales, and that her safety should remain a top priority. Tragically, just four weeks later, Diana abandoned the security detail, setting the stage for the events that would ultimately lead to her untimely death.

As we reflect on Princess Diana’s legacy and the circumstances surrounding her passing, Ken Wharfe’s insights serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of security protocols and the consequences of critical mistakes. The lessons learned from this tragic event continue to shape discussions around royal protection and public safety.
