The somber funeral of Joseph Hertgen took place at St. Luke Roman Catholic Church in Toms River, New Jersey, on a Saturday morning. Joseph, a 27-year-old man from Princeton, tragically lost his life at the hands of his own brother, Matthew, 31. The gruesome incident occurred on February 22 when Matthew allegedly beat and stabbed Joseph to death using a golf club and knife. The brutality of the crime escalated as Matthew reportedly tore out Joseph’s eyeball and consumed it. Additionally, he set fire to the family cat at their upscale Princeton apartment, located just blocks away from the prestigious university.

The police described the scene as “gruesome” and “way overboard,” highlighting the shocking nature of the crime. If convicted, Matthew faces a sentence of 30 years to life in prison for the heinous acts. The entire community has been left reeling by the horrific events, as the Hertgen family was well-known for their affluent lifestyle, residing in a $1.1 million home in Toms River before relocating to Princeton.

Joseph Hertgen was one of three sons born to David and Debra Hertgen, and he was described as a kind and vibrant individual. Working as an analyst for Locust Point Capital in Red Bank since 2023, Joseph was cherished by those who knew him. An obituary honoring his memory highlighted his love for life and infectious smile that lit up every room he entered.

The tragic loss of Joseph Hertgen has left a void in the hearts of his loved ones, friends, and colleagues. The community has come together to mourn his passing and seek justice for the senseless act that took his life. As they gather to pay their final respects, the memory of Joseph will live on in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.
