Rachel Scott’s Debut as Creative Director of Proenza Schouler
Rachel Scott took on the role of creative director at Proenza Schouler just days before the brand’s New York Fashion Week presentation last September. However, today’s show marked her real debut, as it was the first collection she worked on from start to finish after replacing brand founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, who moved to Paris to lead Loewe. Scott received support from fellow designers like Maria Cornejo, Veronica Leoni from Calvin Klein, and Raul Lopez of Luar at the show, as she juggles her responsibilities with her own label, Diotima, which has a show scheduled in just four days.
Being the busiest designer at New York Fashion Week, Scott described this season’s Proenza Schouler woman as “deathly punctual and always on time—but today she was running late.” Differentiating her vision from that of McCollough and Hernandez, she expressed her desire to add more texture, complexity, and hints of eroticism to the collection. She aims to break down the perfection barrier and create a more self-authored and imperfectly perfect aesthetic.
A Fresh Perspective
As the models walked the runway, Scott’s vision of imperfection and eroticism became evident. From asymmetric lapels to askew buttons and exposed darts, each piece had a unique touch that added a sense of individuality and allure. Her expertise in crochet from Diotima translated into charming knit suits and sensual ribbed dresses, showcasing a blend of sophistication and sensuality.
The highlight of the show was the orchid print pieces towards the end, inspired by Scott’s love for cultivating orchids. Hand-painted photographs of delicate flowers at night were printed on dresses, creating a juxtaposition between the handcrafted and digital elements. This play between the organic and the technological reflected Scott’s vision for Proenza Schouler, hinting at a more personal and wild spirit to come.
Overall, Rachel Scott’s debut as creative director of Proenza Schouler was a success, blending her unique perspective with the brand’s established identity. As she continues to evolve and infuse her creativity into the label, fashion enthusiasts can expect a refreshing and daring new chapter for the iconic brand.
