Progressive House candidate indicted amid Chicago-area ICE protests

Progressive Democrat Faces Federal Charges Following Protest at ICE Facility

Kat Abughazaleh, a progressive Democrat vying for an open House seat in Illinois, has found herself in hot water, facing federal charges after her participation in a protest at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing center near Chicago.

Abughazaleh, who has recently relocated to Illinois and has built a following as a social media influencer, is charged with conspiracy to impede or injure a federal officer and with assaulting or impeding an officer engaged in their official duties at the Broadview ICE detention center.

The indictment states that during a protest in September, Abughazaleh and other demonstrators allegedly surrounded a government vehicle, banging on its hood and windows, even going so far as to scratch the car’s surface, etching the word “PIG” onto it. The indictment also claims that the protesters damaged one of the vehicle’s side mirrors and its rear windshield wiper.

A video shared by Abughazaleh captures the moment, showing protesters placing their hands on the vehicle as an agent attempted to navigate through the crowd, with some demonstrators striking the car in protest.

Abughazaleh is among a slew of Democratic candidates contending for the congressional seat currently held by Rep. Jan Schakowsky, who announced she would not seek reelection in 2026.

In her defense, Abughazaleh described the charges as “political prosecution” and an “outrageous attempt to stifle dissent.” She argued, “This case is yet another effort by the Trump administration to criminalize protest and penalize those who dare to raise their voices,” labeling the accusations as “unjust.”

Others named in the indictment include Catherine Sharp, chief of staff to a Chicago alderman and a candidate for the Cook County Board; Michael Rabbitt, a Chicago Democratic ward committeeman; and Brian Straw, a member of the Oak Park Village Board.

Sharp’s attorney, Molly Armour, dismissed the charges as “ludicrous,” asserting confidence that a jury will recognize them for what they are: an attempt by the Trump administration to intimidate citizens from participating in protests and exercising their First Amendment rights.

The Department of Justice has yet to respond to requests for comment on this matter.

Protests have been a common sight outside the Broadview detention center, particularly since the Trump administration’s directive to deploy ICE agents in the city for mass arrests.

Abughazaleh has a history of activism at the center, having previously faced tear gas and physical force from an ICE agent during a prior protest.

Following the news of the indictment, Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, who is also running for the same congressional seat, characterized the charges as “frivolous” and accused ICE of engaging in “violent and dangerous behavior” at Broadview. “Having protested at Broadview multiple times, I can assert that these demonstrations are peaceful protests against the wrongful detention of our fellow residents,” Biss stated on X. “The Trump administration’s targeting of protesters, including political candidates, is a desperate attempt to silence dissent and instill fear in our community. It will not succeed.”
