Co-owner Karen Valentine expressed her and her partner Andrew Parker’s surprise when inquiries about their post-closure plans began pouring in.
The confusion stemmed from a radio host’s erroneous announcement that the hotel was shutting down.
Despite the hotel still being on the market after an unsuccessful tender sale, Valentine assured that operations were continuing as normal.
Having devoted five years to running the hotel every day of the week, the couple were prepared to pass on the reins but intended to keep the business open until a new owner was found.
With the closure of the nearby Commercial Hotel in Omakau, the Lauder Hotel has become an even more vital community hub, Valentine noted.
The Matakanui Rugby Club enjoys complimentary meals every fortnight, while local farmers gather for drinks and conversation.
‘‘Farmers working on their own need somewhere to meet up and chat. It’s the hub of the community,’’ Valentine emphasized.
