A shocking incident occurred in the Bronx when a puffer-jacketed individual assaulted a female NYPD school crossing guard in a random sucker-punch attack. The suspect, identified as Anthony Andrus, 35, with a history of seven prior arrests, was apprehended on a warrant and charged with assault in connection to the disturbing incident that took place on March 5 in the Concourse neighborhood.
The 46-year-old victim, who was on duty at the corner of Gerard Avenue and East 167th Street around 8:15 a.m., was targeted by Andrus, who approached her and struck her in the chest without uttering a word. The attack left the guard in pain, and she was treated at the scene by EMS workers before seeking further medical attention on her own.
Andrus, who initially fled the scene, was captured on surveillance footage wearing a black puffer jacket with the hood pulled up, black pants, and brown construction boots with untied laces. This brazen attack was not an isolated incident for Andrus, as he has a criminal record that includes two previous assault charges, one of which led to misdemeanor charges in 2018.
In addition to the recent assault, Andrus was also arrested for assault in 2017, although the outcomes of these cases remain unclear. The alarming nature of this attack highlights the importance of ensuring the safety and security of those who serve as crossing guards in our communities. The swift apprehension of Andrus serves as a reminder of the dedication and vigilance of law enforcement in holding individuals accountable for their actions.
