Netflix has made the decision to cancel two freshman shows, “Pulse” and “The Residence,” after just one season, according to a report from Variety.

“Pulse” premiered on April 3 and initially garnered 6.5 million views on the Netflix Top 10. However, viewership declined in subsequent weeks, with ratings of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety’s review highlighted issues with the show’s narrative structure, portrayal of sexual harassment, and unlikable characters.

The timing of “Pulse’s” release may have also contributed to its downfall, as it coincided with the finale of another medical drama, “The Pitt,” which received better reviews and audience reception.

The series follows Dr. Danny Simms, played by Willa Fitzgerald, a third-year resident at a trauma center in Miami. When the chief resident is suspended, Danny is unexpectedly promoted, leading to a complicated and illicit romance between her and Xander Phillips, portrayed by Colin Woodell. The show explores the challenges faced by the ER team as they navigate personal and professional struggles amidst a hurricane-induced lockdown.

In addition to Fitzgerald and Woodell, the cast includes Justina Machado, Jack Bannon, Jessie T. Usher, and others. Zoe Robyn created the series and served as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Carlton Cuse. The show was also executive produced by Bradley Gardner, Emma Forman, Michael Klick, and Kate Dennis.

While the cancellation of “Pulse” and “The Residence” may disappoint some viewers, Netflix continues to explore new and exciting content for its platform. Stay tuned for more updates on upcoming shows and projects.
