The Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts program at Purchase College, State of New York (SUNY), is a highly selective program that focuses on nurturing the artistic, intellectual, and professional growth of its students. The program offers a unique interdisciplinary approach that combines independent studio work with rigorous academic studies. State-of-the-art facilities, including photography, video, and digital labs, wood and metal shops, sound art studios, and printmaking and letterpress studios, provide students with the tools they need to explore their creativity.
One of the key advantages of the program is its proximity to the vibrant art communities in New York City, which offer a wealth of opportunities for curricular and extracurricular activities. In 2025, the thesis show will be held at the prestigious PS122 Gallery in Manhattan, giving students a platform to showcase their work to a wider audience.
For students interested in teaching, the program offers paid opportunities to teach undergraduates and develop courses based on their individual expertise. This hands-on experience allows students to develop valuable skills that will benefit them in their future careers.
In addition to the MFA program, Purchase College also offers a Dual Degree Option that combines the MFA degree with an MA in Visual Art and Modern and Contemporary Art, Criticism, and Theory. This unique program allows students to complete their art history requirements in a third year of study, enriching their educational experience.
Students in the program have access to a variety of resources, including the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College’s campus museum, and the Performing Arts Center. Housing fellowships and scholarships are also available to help students afford their education, with in-state tuition starting at $13,256.
The program boasts a vibrant community of makers and thinkers, with students being mentored by renowned artists in various disciplines. Faculty members include Sharon Horvath, Rob Swainston, Kate Gilmore, Cynthia Lin, and many more. Students also benefit from frequent critiques and guest lectures from visiting artists and curators.
