Vladimir Putin Accused of Ordering Hit on Celebrity Beluga Whale
Vladimir Putin is facing backlash following the suspicious death of the “celebrity” Beluga whale, Hvaldimir, who was once believed to have been trained for espionage by the Kremlin.
The lifeless body of Hvaldimir was discovered floating in the Risavika Bay in Southern Norway on September 1 by a father and son. Animal activist groups have alleged that the whale was fatally shot, leading social media users to point fingers at the Russian leader.
Following Hvaldimir’s death, the hashtag “Justice for Hvaldimir” began trending online, sparking outrage among animal rights advocates.
The circumstances surrounding the whale’s death raised suspicions as Hvaldimir was only 15 years old and in good health. Beluga whales typically have a lifespan of up to 60 years.
Marine biologist and Marine Mind director Sebastian Strand expressed his dismay, stating, “Unfortunately, we found Hvaldimir floating in the sea. He has passed away, but the cause of death remains unclear.”
For the past three years, Strand had been monitoring Hvaldimir’s movements on behalf of the Norway-based non-profit organization, Marine Mind.
Despite initial claims by some sources, Marine Mind stated that there was no immediate indication of the cause of death. Strand emphasized, “We observed markings, but it is premature to determine the exact cause of death.”
Hvaldimir’s body has been transferred to the Norwegian Veterinary Institute for further examination. The autopsy results are anticipated to be available in approximately three weeks.
Authorities have confirmed that they are investigating the incident to ascertain if there are grounds to launch a formal inquiry into the matter.
