The New York Times reports that some critical programs that the Trump administration claimed were not meant to face cuts have, in fact, been slashed. Last week, officials were handed lists of active contracts and awards.
However, by the weekend, many of those projects had mysteriously vanished. Then, just yesterday, some of these programs were reinstated with little clarity provided, yet the administration still appears to have cut numerous initiatives it had promised to uphold. They remain unable to articulate their actions or defend their choices.
They lack the ability to commit to a coherent plan, and even their attempts at reversal seem clumsy and misguided. It’s as if they are a child randomly pressing buttons on a keyboard, oblivious to the consequences, with the added twist that this keyboard isn’t connected to a harmless device, but rather to a life support machine — and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
It’s hard to encapsulate the essence of Donald Trump and his administration better than the notion that their incompetence is so profound that they can’t even manage to fail effectively.
This paints a broader picture of the Trump administration as not just misguided, but malevolently ignorant, with a penchant for dismantling structures and systems they don’t understand.
The silver lining in this chaotic incompetence is that it serves as a significant barrier against the establishment of an effective authoritarian regime in the United States. While Trump and his team will certainly continue their attempts at imposing their will, their inherent ineptitude often acts as a buffer, inadvertently protecting the democratic processes in America.
