Ralph Lauren: Catwalk, a book released earlier this month, brings to life the vibrant history of the designer’s numerous fashion shows. Over 50 years since Lauren’s inaugural runway, his brand remains robust, a testament to longevity that many contemporary creative directors of the 2020s can only aspire to. This latest resort collection sees Lauren revisiting classic house styles such as double-breasted suits, slip dresses, and luxurious outerwear, combined with his personal touches in a refined palette of neutrals and metallics. The essence is one of effortless sophistication: looking stylish without appearing to try too hard.
Knitwear played a significant role in achieving this look. Both a pantsuit and a sleeveless halterneck dress were crafted from sweater yarn, promising both comfort and elegance. The camel coat, cut on the bias for an unexpected lightness, exemplified this theme. However, achieving such effortless grace often demands considerable effort behind the scenes. For instance, a sarong skirt paired with a delicate camisole is designed without side seams, necessitating complex internal construction to maintain its shape. Additionally, a dress adorned with micro cut beads required 800 hours to complete. Many ensembles were complemented by a new handbag, the RL Madison, featuring hardware inspired by one of Lauren’s favorite belts.
