A shocking incident unfolded on the Near West Side this week when a 35-year-old man, Christian Gardner, allegedly attacked a 64-year-old construction contractor, Freddy Pena-Bustos, in a random and violent manner. The altercation took place in the alley behind the 2400 block of West Gladys around 7:45 a.m. on Monday.
According to officials, Gardner and Pena-Bustos got into an argument for unknown reasons, during which Gardner brandished a pocket knife with a three-inch blade. In a horrifying turn of events, Gardner proceeded to stab Pena-Bustos a total of 12 times – eight times in the chest and four times in the back, as detailed in a criminal complaint. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing Gardner standing over Pena-Bustos before fleeing.
Authorities were able to piece together the events leading up to and following the attack through video surveillance footage, tracking Gardner’s movements on public transportation, and recovering the weapon – a bloody knife – discarded on the outbound Eisenhower Expressway. Additionally, clothing believed to belong to Gardner was found nearby.
After a thorough investigation, Chicago police officers apprehended Gardner near his residence approximately three hours after the stabbing. Subsequently, Judge James Murphy III ordered Gardner to be detained pending trial on two counts of murder, emphasizing the random nature of the attack.
This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk in unexpected places, and the importance of remaining vigilant in all circumstances. Our thoughts go out to the victim, Freddy Pena-Bustos, and his loved ones during this difficult time.
