As we approach the business end of the 2024-25 football season, the race for trophies, European spots, and relegation battles are heating up across Europe. With domestic leagues and UEFA club competitions nearing their conclusion, the focus is shifting towards end-of-year awards, including the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

The Ballon d’Or, awarded every October to the best player in the world over the past 12 months, is a highly subjective accolade determined by votes from 100 journalists representing the top 100 FIFA-ranked countries. While there are many contenders for the award, players and fans alike view it as the ultimate recognition of individual performance. Lionel Messi leads the all-time winners list with eight awards, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo with five.

As we are approximately six months away from this year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, it’s worth analyzing the current top contenders according to The Athletic. These rankings will be updated regularly as players’ form fluctuates over the remainder of this season and into the next one.

1) Raphinha (Barcelona and Brazil)
Raphinha has emerged as a standout performer in La Liga, leading Barcelona in goal contributions with 28 goals and 20 assists in 45 appearances. His remarkable season could culminate in a historic treble for Barcelona, making him a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or.

2) Ousmane Dembele (Paris Saint-Germain and France)
Dembele has showcased both talent and consistency this season, scoring 32 goals in 41 matches for PSG. His contributions have been crucial in PSG’s pursuit of a treble, with the team unbeaten in Ligue 1 after 28 games.

5) Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid and France)
Mbappe has enjoyed a stellar debut season at Real Madrid, scoring 32 goals in 47 appearances. Despite recent setbacks, Mbappe remains a pivotal player for both Real Madrid and the French national team.

6) Mohamed Salah (Liverpool and Egypt)
Salah has been in scintillating form for Liverpool, contributing 44 goals in the Premier League alone. While his recent performances have dipped slightly, Salah remains a top contender for the Ballon d’Or.

7) Alessandro Bastoni (Inter and Italy)
Bastoni has been a stalwart for Inter this season, showcasing his defensive prowess and passing ability. His contributions have been vital in Inter’s pursuit of a treble.

8) Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona and Poland)
Lewandowski has been a goal-scoring machine for Barcelona, netting 40 goals across all competitions. His impact on Barcelona’s attack has been immense, making him a strong candidate for the Ballon d’Or.

9) Pedri (Barcelona and Spain)
Pedri has been a midfield maestro for Barcelona, orchestrating play and contributing both defensively and offensively. His consistent performances have been crucial for Barcelona this season.

10) Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid and England)
Bellingham has had a mixed season with Real Madrid but has still managed 11 goals and 10 assists from midfield. His ability to dictate play and make late runs into the box has been key for Real Madrid’s attack.
