Ray Romano to Star in HBO Max Drama Pilot “How to Survive Without Me”
Ray Romano has been announced as the lead for the upcoming HBO Max drama pilot “How to Survive Without Me.” The pilot, created by Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran, with a story by Berlanti, Doran, and Robbie Rogers, follows the De Angelis family as they navigate life after the passing of their matriarch, Beverly. Despite her absence, Beverly continues to influence the family from beyond, urging them to stay connected and support each other through life’s challenges.
In the pilot, Romano will portray Leo, a recent widower who is unexpectedly thrust into the role of a single parent to his five adult children. As the family adjusts to life without their mother, Leo must find his own voice and become the new center of the family.
Sarah Aubrey, head of Max Original Programming, expressed excitement about working with Romano on the project, noting that the show will explore themes of love, loss, and family dynamics in a relatable and heartfelt manner. The series aims to deepen the audience’s connection to the characters and their story over multiple seasons.
Alongside Berlanti and Doran, executive producers include Robbie Rogers, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman. Warner Bros. Television is producing the pilot as part of its overall deal with Berlanti Productions.
Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs for Warner Bros. Television, praised Romano’s talent for bringing depth and humor to his characters, predicting that his portrayal of Leo will resonate with viewers and enhance the emotional impact of the series.
With a successful career in television and film, Romano is best known for his role in the long-running sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond.” His upcoming projects include the second season of “Running Point,” as well as “No Good Deed,” “Made for Love,” and “Bookie.” Romano’s film credits include “The Irishman,” “The Big Sick,” and the “Ice Age” franchise.

“How to Survive Without Me” is part of HBO Max’s lineup of drama pilots, alongside “American Blue” starring Milo Ventimiglia.
