Gual-Suárez pointed out that if the glowing toe hairs were useful for hunting, they would be located near the mouth, similar to an anglerfish’s lure, and the bats would have a different hunting strategy. He emphasized the need for more studies to determine the function of the photoluminescent toe hairs. It is possible that the glowing feature serves no purpose and is simply a byproduct of the structure of the hairs, which are used for grooming or sensing. Alternatively, it could be used for communication with other bats during flights or roosting.

In another study, scientists observed the rare “golden channel” decay of subatomic particles known as kaons. This decay process involves a kaon producing a pion, a neutrino, and an antineutrino, with the mediation of particles called W and Z bosons. Particle physicist Cristina Lazzeroni from the University of Birmingham explained that if the decay deviates from standard model predictions, it could signal the presence of new physics that is currently unknown. Some physicists have theorized the existence of new particles like a Z’ boson or a leptoquark that could act as intermediaries in the decay process.
