The recent controversy surrounding a research experiment conducted on Reddit users without their consent has sparked a heated debate about ethics in online research. The social media platform Reddit, known for its diverse communities and discussions, was unwittingly used as a testing ground for an AI-powered experiment by researchers at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

The experiment, which took place in a subreddit called r/ChangeMyView, involved seeding over 1700 comments generated by large language models (LLMs) into the community without disclosing that they were AI-generated. These comments ranged from mimicking personal experiences such as rape to posing as a trauma counselor specializing in abuse. The researchers behind the experiment instructed the AI models to assume that Reddit users had provided informed consent and agreed to donate their data, bypassing ethical considerations.

A draft version of the study’s findings revealed that the AI-generated comments were significantly more persuasive in changing people’s viewpoints compared to human users. This has raised concerns about the potential effectiveness of AI-powered botnets in influencing online communities without detection.

The moderators of r/ChangeMyView raised objections to the experiment after it was disclosed and lodged a complaint with the University of Zurich’s ethics committee. Other academics, including Carissa Véliz from the University of Oxford, criticized the researchers for not upholding ethical standards and respecting the autonomy of research subjects.

The controversy has also highlighted the need for stricter ethical review processes in academic research involving human subjects. Matt Hodgkinson, a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics, questioned the justification for the deception used in the study and emphasized the importance of obtaining informed consent from participants.

When contacted for comment, the researchers declined to respond and referred inquiries to the University of Zurich’s press office. The university has acknowledged the need for a more rigorous review process in the future and stated that an investigation is currently underway. The researchers have decided not to formally publish the paper, and the university spokesperson declined to disclose the identities of those involved.

Overall, the incident serves as a cautionary tale about the ethical implications of conducting research on online platforms without transparent consent from participants. It underscores the importance of upholding ethical standards and respecting the rights of individuals in academic research.
