Joey Jia, the founder and CEO of ReelShort, a vertical content business, is scheduled to speak at the Vertical Media Summit next month. This event will be hosted by the media research firm Owl & Co. in Hollywood.
On June 3, Jia will engage in a discussion with Hernan Lopez, the chief of Owl & Co., who is also known for his previous role at Fox and as the founder of the Wondery podcast network. ReelShort, recognized for its vertical drama streaming, offers a vast selection of series and is part of Crazy Maple Studios, a leading digital media initiative.
Announcing the summit, Owl & Co. remarked, âMicrodramas were the first vertical scripted format to scale globally, but it is the opening act, not the show.â The summit will be held at W Hollywood, focusing on the evolution of vertical media to include genres like action, animation, procedural, and prestige, with comedy, unscripted content, news, and sports already in production.
Research from Owl & Co. highlights that vertical media content, designed for phone screens, generates approximately $1 billion in global subscription revenue, excluding China.
Other notable participants in the summit include TikTok, YouTube, Fox, CAA, Holywater Tech, and Hoorae Productions. Jia and Lopez are set to have a fireside chat on the business and creative elements of vertical media, alongside various panels and sessions.
The Vertical Media Summit builds on the foundation of the Short Drama Business Summit hosted by Owl & Co. last December. The company underscores that vertical media is a rapidly growing field âwith its own economics, aesthetics and audience psychology. Most of it is still up for grabs.â
