After almost 19 years, personal belongings and remains connected to a Lakewood woman who went missing have been discovered on Mount of the Holy Cross, as reported by the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.
Michelle Vanek, aged 35, disappeared on September 24, 2005, after becoming separated from a hiking partner near the summit of the 14er.
Despite the efforts of hundreds of volunteer and professional searchers who scoured the mountain looking for the mother of four, she was never located.
The Vail Mountain Rescue Group recently located “personal items” that resembled belongings Vanek had in her possession, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. Further information on when and where the items were found, as well as the specific items discovered, was not provided by the agency.
“This isn’t just the discovery of remains — this is a potential step toward healing and closure for a family that has waited almost 19 years,” stated sheriff’s officials on Saturday.
Despite years passing, crews and individuals have persisted in their efforts to locate Vanek, with a search grid map still displayed in Sheriff James van Beek’s office as a reminder of the unresolved case.
“This discovery signifies a significant development in the prolonged search for Michelle,” sheriff’s officials emphasized on Saturday. “While awaiting forensic confirmation, we are collaborating closely with our partners and other experts to ensure a thorough investigation that respects the emotional burden carried by Michelle’s family and community.”
