Bringing Couture History to Life at Balenciaga
Demna, the creative force behind Balenciaga, recently showcased a stunning couture collection that paid homage to the house’s rich history. In a backstage interview with Vogue Runway, Demna emphasized the significance of couture in the world of fashion, highlighting the intricate narrative that unfolded in the latest show.
A key figure in this narrative is Slavik, a model who served as a bridge between the past and present of Balenciaga. With a deep connection to the house’s founder, Mr. Balenciaga, Slavik brings a treasure trove of memories and a unique perspective to the current design team.
One of the standout pieces from the collection was a black viscose velvet gown, originally created by Mr. Balenciaga over 50 years ago. This iconic dress holds a special place in Slavik’s heart, as it was worn by her during her modeling career. Notably, the gown was also famously ordered by Grace Kelly for her 40th birthday celebration, The Scorpion Ball, in 1969.
Bringing this historic design back to life was no easy task. Peter Copping, head of special projects at Balenciaga, described the process as complex and challenging. With limited references to work from, the team had to rely on archival photographs and Slavik’s memories to recreate the gown with precision.
The recreated gown stayed true to the original design, with a few subtle alterations. Grace Kelly’s version of the dress featured a unique touch, omitting the double string of pearls that adorned the original creation.
