Breitbart News reports:
Analysis: Oregon Poised to Spend $500 Million More on Healthcare for Undocumented Residents than on State Police
Recent reports indicate that Oregon—under Democratic leadership—plans to allocate $500 million more toward a healthcare initiative benefiting undocumented migrants than towards funding its state police. This raises significant questions about state budgeting priorities.
The Healthier Oregon Program (HOP), inaugurated in 2022, is escalating in cost, projected to reach $1.3 billion, reflecting an astronomical 1,100 percent increase since its inception. In comparison, the budget for the Oregon State Police stands at just over $717 million.
The Oregon Health Authority clarified that as of July 1, 2023, immigration status is no longer a barrier to qualifying for the Full Oregon Health Plan (OHP).
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, criticized this budgeting misalignment harshly, asserting, “It’s absurd. Oregon will spend over $500 million more on providing healthcare for immigrants, regardless of their legal status, than it will on ensuring the safety of its citizens through state police in this budget cycle.”
This glaring disparity is emblematic of broader challenges the Democratic Party faces in the narrative surrounding government funding. They may vociferously deny prioritizing healthcare for undocumented individuals; however, the facts paint a different picture, revealing inherent contradictions in their fiscal tools.

Over the past four years, Oregon’s healthcare spending for undocumented immigrants has surged by 1,100%. Are we to believe, as some media outlets assert, that federal funds cannot support Medicaid for undocumented individuals?

The budget trends unfolding in Oregon are reflective of wider Democratic Party priorities. While the party is known for advocating against police funding, it vigorously defends the provision of free healthcare to individuals residing in the country without legal documentation.
