On Tuesday, Republicans successfully retained the House seat previously held by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Republican Clay Fuller emerged victorious over Democrat Shawn Harris in a special runoff election for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, securing another vote for the GOP’s slim majority in the House.
However, Fuller’s win is projected to be by a significantly smaller margin than Donald Trump’s 37-point victory in 2024.
This result is part of a larger pattern since Trump resumed office last year, where Democrats have consistently outperformed expectations in various elections, ranging from gubernatorial races to legislative contests.
The northwest Georgia district, known as the most conservative area in the state, saw a closer race that has encouraged Democrats about their prospects for flipping seats in the upcoming midterm elections in November.
Despite being heavily outspent, Harris outperformed recent Democratic showings in the district. Fuller’s campaign, along with GOP-aligned external groups, invested over $1.2 million in the runoff, as reported by AdImpact. Conversely, Harris did not receive financial backing from national Democratic groups and spent only $300,000. In the immediate future, Fuller’s victory provides Speaker Mike Johnson with a secure GOP caucus vote.
Fuller, endorsed by Trump, initially finished second to Harris in March’s initial round of voting, largely due to a divided GOP field.
