Retired Police Officer Shot in North Center
A 74-year-old retired police officer was shot and severely injured after exiting his vehicle in North Center on Monday morning, according to authorities. The perpetrator responsible for the attack is still at large.
The retired sergeant had just stepped out of his maroon Jeep in the 2000 block of West Berteau, at the intersection with Lincoln Avenue, around 8:58 a.m., as reported by the police.
Two individuals opened fire, with one bullet hitting the victim’s left arm and another grazing his neck. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
The Chicago Police Department did not disclose any motive for the shooting nor did they provide any descriptions of the suspects involved.
An eyewitness stated that they saw a gunman firing from the southeast corner of the intersection, in close proximity to the victim’s SUV. Following the incident, police were monitoring a nearby apartment building after receiving reports of individuals fleeing into the premises post-shooting. However, no arrests have been made thus far.
This incident marks the second shooting in North Center this year, compared to one last year and three at this time in 2022.
CWBChicago was founded in 2013 by a group of residents from Wrigleyville and Boystown who were dissatisfied with the inaccurate information provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.
Since its inception, our coverage area has expanded to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side neighborhoods. Despite this growth, our core mission remains unchanged: to deliver original public safety reporting with enhanced context and in-depth coverage compared to mainstream media outlets.
