WASHINGTON — Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has appointed a senior health official to temporarily serve as the surgeon general until a nominee confirmed by the Senate takes over.

Stephanie Haridopolos, a family medicine physician who holds the position of senior adviser and chief of staff for the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General, has been named the director of health communications for the office, according to an email Kennedy sent to staff on Tuesday evening. The email explained that Assistant Secretary for Health Brian Christine exercised his “delegation of authority powers” to enable Haridopolos to perform the responsibilities of the surgeon general.

Haridopolos will be responsible for promoting public health actions, advisories, and guidance from the U.S. Surgeon General’s office until the next surgeon general officially takes office, Kennedy stated.
