“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 sees a drop in viewership in its second week on Luminate’s weekly streaming originals chart. Last week, the Amazon Prime Video series secured second place with 764.7 million minutes watched in the first full week of availability of its first three episodes combined with the first day of availability of its fourth episode. However, during the Sept. 6-12 viewing window, which included the first full week of Episode 4 and the first day of Episode 5, it only garnered 372.7 million minutes watched, landing in fourth place.
This significant drop in viewership is concerning, especially for a large IP title like “The Lord of the Rings,” as one would expect word-of-mouth appeal to help maintain viewership levels. While Amazon has noted that a significant portion of the series’ fans watch from other territories, no data has been provided to support this claim.
On the other hand, “The Perfect Couple” emerged as the top title of the week, with a staggering 3.4 billion minutes watched in its first week of availability on Netflix. This achievement marks the first time a series has crossed 3 billion minutes on Luminate’s chart since the release of “Bridgerton” Season 2 Part 2 in June.
Following closely behind “The Perfect Couple” is “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” on Hulu, debuting with 781.1 million minutes watched in its first week. “Selling Sunset” Season 8 also made an impressive debut with 586.7 million minutes watched.
Other titles on the chart include “Outlast” Season 2, “Worst Ex Ever,” and “Kaos,” all with decent viewership numbers. However, the bottom three titles — “The Accident,” “Bad Monkey,” and “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” — fell below 300 million minutes watched.
In the movies chart, “Rebel Ridge” claimed the top spot with 1.5 billion minutes watched in its first week on Netflix. “The Deliverance” and “The Union” followed closely behind in second and third place, respectively.
Overall, the streaming originals chart showcases a diverse range of content, with both series and movies garnering significant viewership. It will be interesting to see how viewership trends evolve in the coming weeks and how different titles continue to perform on streaming platforms.
