Coming out as a gay man in high school was a difficult journey for Airyn. Despite his courage in being true to himself, he found it challenging to feel accepted by the queer community. He recalls feeling marginalized and excluded, particularly by gay men who adhered to a narrow beauty standard characterized by thinness, whiteness, muscularity, and masculinity.

“I was always told I was too much of something or not enough of something growing up,” Airyn shared. “Too big, not skinny enough. Not Black enough, not white enough. Too feminine, not masculine enough. It was never just, ‘You’re just right, just the way you are.’

However, in November 2024, Airyn made the decision to undergo hormone therapy as part of his transition journey. This significant step not only helped him align his physical appearance with his true identity but also brought about a profound sense of empowerment and self-acceptance.

Reflecting on his transformation, Airyn credits the influence of Black women in shaping his perception of self. “I think a big part of my transition is also the influence Black women have had on me,” he explained. “I think stepping into this new identity, while also being more proud of my Blackness, makes me feel closer to them in some way.”

Airyn’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-love, acceptance, and embracing one’s true identity. Despite facing challenges and adversity, he has emerged stronger and more resilient, ready to embrace the fullness of who he is.
