Becoming a father has notably changed Robert Pattinson — and in ways he didn’t expect.
In an upcoming cover feature with Icon Magazine, which will be available on Tuesday, October 14, Pattinson, 39, revealed that since the arrival of his daughter with fiancée Suki Waterhouse in March 2024, he’s embraced the role of a typical suburban father.
In an excerpt shared on Instagram on Friday, October 3, the actor expressed that parenthood has granted him “so much more patience” now that he has a 19-month-old, stating, “It’s really surprising, but I genuinely love spending time with babies.”
He added, “It’s amusing how these conversations shift to ‘normal’ topics — like schools and daycares… It’s bizarre. I find myself compelled to wear Patagonia puffer jackets and cargo shorts now. It’s just what I do.”
Contrary to his fatherly role, Pattinson mentioned that portraying “normal” characters on film is challenging for him, as he often finds himself cast in more unhinged roles, like the vigilante Batman or the brooding vampire Edward Cullen from Twilight.
“At one point, I really wanted to embody more standard characters,” Pattinson revealed to Icon. “Yet, it’s surprisingly challenging to play everyday people when you’ve predominantly portrayed eccentric roles.”
In his latest project, Die My Love, Pattinson assumes the role of a new father alongside his on-screen partner, Jennifer Lawrence. This psychological thriller by Lynne Ramsay delves into the life of a mother, Grace (played by Lawrence), grappling with severe postpartum depression.
Pattinson shared, “Since my daughter’s arrival, it has completely reshaped my approach to work,” during a press conference at Cannes in May. “You truly feel like an entirely different individual overnight.”

Lawrence, 35, a mother of two with her husband, Cooke Maroney, expressed how their shared experiences as new parents facilitated their collaboration on Die My Love. “We were both at similar crossroads in our lives,” she noted during a post-screening Q&A last month. “Both of us wanted to share insights about our babies, which was easy. He’s a very congenial person and incredibly talented.”
Pattinson’s partner, Waterhouse, 33, fully agrees and shared in a July conversation with British Vogue that he’s “the father any person could dream of,” remarking, “I mean, just observe a father and his daughter — it’s a pure love story.”
“He was right there with me [during the labor experience], and like any dad, he was anxious,” she recounted, “but for someone prone to anxiety, he has been unbelievably calm.”
Waterhouse, who has been with Pattinson since 2018 and became engaged in 2023, shared that she recognized he was the one when she still felt “really captivated” by him six years later. “I’ve never experienced that before, it feels surreal,” she remarked to British Vogue. “This love, building a family, and creating our own little universe… No matter what occurs, this is my ideal.”
