Bangkok:
Reports have confirmed that four Thai nationals lost their lives in northern Israel due to rocket attacks from Lebanon, as stated by Thailand’s foreign minister. Maris Sangiampongsa expressed his deep sorrow over the incident near Metula on Thursday, mentioning that one Thai citizen also sustained injuries.
The head of the regional council in Metula revealed that a total of five individuals, including a local farmer and four foreign farm workers, were killed in the rocket strike from Lebanon.
Approximately 30,000 Thai nationals reside in Israel, attracted by the higher wages compared to their home country. The Thai community in Israel has faced significant challenges since the conflict with Hamas began, resulting in the deaths of at least 39 individuals following the October 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel.
Furthermore, over two dozen individuals were reportedly taken captive by militants during the assault. A brief truce in November led to the release of 23 Thai nationals who were held captive.
Tragically, the Israeli army confirmed that two Thai nationals lost their lives while in captivity in Gaza back in May. The prolonged conflict between Israel and Lebanon has displaced tens of thousands and escalated with intensified air strikes against Hezbollah by the Israeli army in mid-September, followed by limited ground operations in southern Lebanon.
Foreign Minister Maris emphasized the importance of all parties committing to peace to protect innocent civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.
