Rohit Sharma, the star batter for Mumbai Indians (MI), will miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS). He sustained a hamstring injury during a recent defeat at home against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
During the sixth over of the run chase, Sharma retired hurt with 19 runs off 13 deliveries and did not return to bat, resulting in MI falling short by 18 runs. Earlier reports indicated that his participation would depend on scan results.
Regrettably, the injury seems more serious than initially thought, and Sharma might need to spend time on the sidelines.
“The medical staff is assessing him… An official update will be given when available,” stated MI batter Naman Dhir in the pre-match press conference (via Sportstar).
“Rohit Sharma is all but ruled out of Mumbai Indians’ next game against Punjab tomorrow. This could very well stretch to more than just one game,” reports India Today.
Although Sharma’s absence is a significant setback for MI, the team will be strengthened by the arrival of Will Jacks. The in-form all-rounder, who excelled in the T20 World Cup 2026, is set to join the squad.
MI faces a challenge in replacing Rohit Sharma at the top order
MI, currently under pressure with three consecutive losses, must now reassess their top order without Sharma. They have the experienced Quinton de Kock as an option on the bench but would need to adjust their overseas player strategy for an all-Proteas combination.
Regarding Indian replacements, MI lacks a direct substitute for an opener. They might consider unconventional choices like Robin Minz or Naman Dhir to maintain their current overseas lineup.
