Ruby Sky Stiler is an artist whose paintings feature irregularly gridded, geometric backgrounds that resemble patchwork or aerial views of agricultural landscapes. The intricate patterns in each rectangle hint at floral or decorative motifs, which transform into almost topographical landscapes when viewed from a distance. Within these geometric backgrounds, boldly delineated women take center stage, often returning the viewer’s gaze directly.

In her work, Stiler reimagines the history of Western art by portraying women in the empowered role of The Artist. Instead of being seen as muses or objectified subjects, her figures exude qualities of control, liberty, and leisure. This shift challenges traditional gender roles in art and positions women as creators rather than just subjects.

Displayed at Frieze LA with Alexander Gray Associates, Stiler’s paintings offer a fresh perspective on 20th-century abstraction, particularly the predominantly male Cubist movement. By placing women at the forefront of her compositions, she subverts the gendered dynamics of art history and presents a more inclusive and contemporary view of gender roles in the art world.

One of Stiler’s notable works, “Women with Children in Blue,” showcases nude figures in repose or with children, highlighting the multifaceted roles of women as creators and caregivers. Through her mosaic-like compositions, she challenges art historical tropes and introduces a new narrative that celebrates women’s agency and creativity.

Stiler’s meticulous process involves using graphite transfers to apply patterned outlines to her pieces, a technique that pays homage to textile design—a craft traditionally dismissed as “women’s work” in the art world. Pastel acrylic hues fill out the bodies and backgrounds in her paintings, while bold outlines reminiscent of minimalist Bauhaus design define the forms with precision.

Currently, Stiler is gearing up for a solo exhibition with Alexander Gray Associates scheduled for November. To explore more of her work, visit her website and Instagram page. Through her innovative approach to composition and subject matter, Stiler continues to challenge conventions and redefine the role of women in art, showcasing the power and creativity of female artists in the contemporary art world.
