In a recent statement, former President Donald Trump asserted that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is partly a consequence of efforts by his political adversaries to thwart his presidency. This contention echoes a narrative he has maintained since his 2016 campaign.

Trump lamented, “Instead of fostering a more amicable relationship with Russia, which I endeavored to cultivate, we find ourselves entrenched in a proxy war, aggravated by the lingering chaos of the Russiagate saga. The devastation in Ukraine is staggering, with countless lives lost, and we teeter on the brink of World War III,” as he articulated in a Newsweek op-ed published on Monday.

In his commentary, he drew parallels between the actions taken against him years ago and the contemporary challenges he faces, emphasizing that the baseless allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election continue to cast a long shadow over American politics.

“While the Russia Hoax inflicted significant harm on me, my family, and my associates, the true victims are the American people,” Trump claimed. “The damage this charade has wrought on our nation is nearly beyond measure. It undermined our democratic integrity, jeopardized our national security, and threatened our freedoms.”

‘There Must Be a Reckoning’

Trump, who campaigned in 2016 on a platform that challenged the political establishment, alleged that this establishment retaliated against him with full force. “I pledged to halt rampant illegal immigration, dismantle globalist trade agreements, end the capitulation to Communist China, confront the entrenched bureaucracy, and break the cycle of endless foreign conflicts,” he wrote.

He accused a coalition of unelected officials within the government, aligned with their chosen candidate Hillary Clinton, of orchestrating what he termed a “de-facto coup attempt” through the Russiagate narrative. Despite their inability to remove him from office, he described the ensuing three years as a “massive disinformation campaign and unlawful persecution based on the grotesque falsehood that I was a traitor.”

Trump extensively referenced the Durham report, which scrutinized the intelligence operations surrounding the 2016 presidential election. He claimed, “The Durham Report demonstrates that the principal actors were aware from the outset that the Russia Collusion conspiracy was fabricated. The FBI initiated this witch hunt devoid of any substantial evidence, and when they encountered exculpatory information, they suppressed it and perpetuated the hoax.”

He highlighted that figures such as then-FBI Director James Comey, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Clinton were cognizant of the misuse of power, stating, “Perhaps the most concerning aspect of all is that the Russia Hoax has normalized the weaponization of law enforcement against political adversaries.”

While Trump did not directly address his current legal predicaments, he hinted at them, suggesting that “interference in the 2024 election is happening right before our eyes.” Presently, he faces multiple legal challenges related to his presidency, including two cases overseen by special counsel Jack Smith—one concerning classified documents allegedly mishandled at Mar-a-Lago and another related to the January 6 Capitol incident.

“There must be a reckoning. Accountability now rests with the voters,” Trump asserted. “The Durham Report has crystallized the stakes, and we are at a crossroads: either the Deep State dismantles America, or we dismantle the Deep State.”

Censorship

According to Trump, the manipulative forces extend beyond the federal government to encompass Big Tech. “As the Twitter Files have revealed, the Radical Left establishment exploited the Russia Hoax to undermine free speech. They constructed an expansive domestic censorship apparatus under the pretense of combating so-called ‘Russian disinformation’—a term they hastily redefined to include any content they disapproved of,” he contended.

It’s noteworthy that Twitter permanently banned Trump on January 8, 2021, as the fallout from the January 6 incident was still unfolding. On that day, he posted a video urging peace among the gathered crowd at the Capitol, requesting that they return home, only for the video to be suppressed while he faced temporary bans on both Twitter and Facebook. The following day, Facebook blocked his account until Inauguration Day, while Twitter imposed a permanent ban shortly thereafter.

A recent lawsuit filed by Missouri and Louisiana revealed that the Biden administration allegedly directed social media platforms on whom to censor. This case is currently being appealed by the Biden administration.
