Samsung has quietly launched the Galaxy A16 5G, a budget-friendly smartphone that offers a clean design, a large 90Hz display, and promising software updates. Priced at under £200/$200, this phone is accessible to a wide range of users.
Design & Build:
The Galaxy A16 5G comes in Blue Black, Light Green, or Light Grey color options. It features a familiar flat-edged plastic body with no IP rating for water resistance. Despite being made of plastic, the phone feels solid and well-built. The design is minimalist and similar to other Samsung phones, with a slightly larger chin bezel and a soft-edged plastic rim.
Screen & Speakers:
The phone sports a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, providing vibrant colors and decent brightness levels. The display is suitable for media consumption, although the bezels are a bit chunky. The phone features a single bottom speaker that gets loud but lacks bass, providing clear sound at moderate volumes.
Specs & Performance:
Powered by an Exynos 1330 chipset and 4GB of RAM, the Galaxy A16 5G offers modest performance suitable for everyday tasks. However, performance can be sluggish at times, especially when multitasking or running demanding apps. Gaming performance is limited, with the phone struggling to handle graphically intensive games.
Camera:
The phone features a 50MP main rear camera, a 5MP ultra-wide lens, a 2MP macro lens, and a 13MP selfie camera. The camera setup is similar to its predecessor, the Galaxy A15 5G, delivering average results in good lighting conditions. The ultra-wide camera suffers from noise and loss of detail, while low-light performance is subpar.
Battery Life & Charging:
With a 5000mAh battery, the Galaxy A16 5G offers solid battery life for light users, lasting up to two days on a single charge. However, the phone’s battery performance is slightly lower than its predecessor. The phone supports 25W wired charging but does not come with a charger in the box.
Software:
The phone runs on Android 14 with Samsung’s One UI 6.1 overlay. Samsung promises six years of software updates, ensuring long-term support for the device. The software experience is familiar for Samsung users, with customization options and a clean UI. However, some AI features found in Samsung’s flagship phones are missing.
Price & Availability:
The Galaxy A16 5G is priced at £199 and is available for purchase from Samsung and various retailers. It offers good value for money but faces tough competition from other budget smartphones in the market. Discounted options from brands like Poco, Redmi, and Honor may offer better performance and camera quality at a similar price point.
