Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Z Fold 7, touting it as the brand’s first ‘Ultra’ foldable phone. With similar specs to the top-of-the-line Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, the Z Fold 7 promises to deliver impressive camera performance.
Traditionally, foldable phones have struggled to match the camera capabilities of their non-folding counterparts due to the need for slimness in design. This often results in smaller sensors and condensed optics, leading to inferior camera performance.
In a head-to-head comparison between the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy S25 Ultra, the camera specs reveal some interesting differences. Both phones feature a 200Mp main camera with similar specifications, but the optics differ slightly. The Z Fold 7 utilizes a slimmed-down version of the main camera lens, resulting in photos that are almost identical to those taken with the S25 Ultra.
When it comes to main camera performance, the two phones deliver comparable results, with slight differences only visible upon close inspection. The S25 Ultra edges ahead in terms of sharpness at the edges of the frame, but for everyday use, the photos from both phones are essentially the same.
In terms of ultrawide camera capabilities, the S25 Ultra boasts a 50Mp sensor compared to the Z Fold 7’s 12Mp unit. Surprisingly, both phones deliver similar results in daylight conditions, with the S25 Ultra slightly outperforming in low-light scenarios.
The telephoto capabilities of the two phones also differ, with the S25 Ultra featuring two telephoto cameras compared to the Z Fold 7’s single unit. While both phones offer similar performance in most scenarios, the S25 Ultra excels in close-up macro shots.
The S25 Ultra shines when it comes to longer zoom capabilities, with a dedicated 50Mp 5x periscope telephoto lens. The phone also offers superior digital zoom up to 100x, compared to the Z Fold 7’s maximum zoom of 30x.
In terms of selfies, the S25 Ultra’s 12Mp selfie camera with autofocus outperforms the Z Fold 7’s 10Mp units. However, the Z Fold 7’s folding design allows for versatile selfie options using the main cameras.
Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 impresses with its camera performance, offering similar capabilities to the S25 Ultra in many respects. While there are differences in zoom capabilities and macro shooting, the Z Fold 7’s unique folding design and expansive display provide a versatile and enjoyable photography experience. Despite some compromises compared to bar phones, the Z Fold 7 represents a significant step forward in foldable phone camera technology.
