Samsung has been facing criticism for lack of innovation in its mobile division, with the recent Galaxy S25 series and the latest Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 offering only minor updates. However, the company’s Display group showcased some exciting display concepts at MWC 2025 in Barcelona, hinting at what the future holds.

One of the standout concepts was a potential Nintendo Switch rival that folds. Handheld consoles offer a great gaming experience on the go but can be bulky. Samsung’s concept features a horizontally folding display with joysticks and d-pad that neatly slot into each other. This design could make portable gaming more convenient and enjoyable, provided the crease doesn’t affect visibility.

Another intriguing concept showcased by Samsung was a flexible briefcase with a folding display. Unlike LG’s StanByMe Go, which has a massive 27-inch display, Samsung’s briefcase concept offers a more portable solution. The display folds and unfolds when you open and close the briefcase, allowing for a larger screen in a compact form factor. This could be ideal for scenarios like camping or hiking where a larger screen would enhance the viewing experience.

The most unconventional concept involved flip phones with a unique folding mechanism. Instead of the traditional vertical fold, this concept featured two hinges at the top and bottom, resulting in a taller display when closed. While this design offers a fresh take on flip phones, the exposed part of the display raises concerns about durability and protection from the elements.

Despite the innovative concepts showcased by Samsung, some ideas may face practical challenges in real-world usage. It’s essential for companies to continue exploring new form factors and designs to push the boundaries of smartphone technology.

Samsung’s presence at the event follows the launch of its new mid-range phones, including the Galaxy A26, Galaxy A36, and Galaxy A56. As Samsung continues to experiment with display technology, the future of smartphones looks promising.
