Austin-Based Defense Startup Saronic Raises $600 Million for Autonomous Ship Factory

Recently, Austin-based defense startup Saronic made headlines by securing a $600 million Series C funding round to support the construction of an autonomous ship factory named “Port Alpha.” This funding round has quadrupled Saronic’s valuation to an impressive $4 billion, marking a significant milestone for the company since its last round of funding.

Leading the Series C round is investor Elad Gil, with support from General Catalyst and existing investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, 8VC, and Caffeinated Capital. This latest funding round positions Saronic as one of the most valuable defense tech startups in the U.S., potentially ranking second or third after Anduril, which was valued at $14 billion in its last round.

Notably, Saronic is not the only defense tech company with ambitious manufacturing plans. Anduril, for instance, recently announced its intentions to establish a billion-dollar megafactory in Ohio. However, Saronic is actively seeking a suitable location for Port Alpha, the futuristic shipyard that is set to commence operations within the next five years.

With a focus on developing autonomous surface vessels (ASVs), Saronic has already introduced three models of ASVs up to 24 feet in length. The company plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities to build larger unmanned ships, aiming to enhance U.S. shipbuilding capacity and compete with China in the naval industry.

The rise of unmanned ships in naval warfare has gained traction, particularly following Ukraine’s successful use of drone ships to counter Russian naval forces in Crimea. This trend underscores the strategic importance of autonomous vessels in modern maritime operations.

According to Saronic’s co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas, the increased valuation of the company can be attributed to its rapid development of new vessels and software. With nearly $850 million raised to date, Saronic’s success reflects the growing interest and investment in defense tech within Silicon Valley.

Overall, Saronic’s latest funding round signifies the continued momentum of defense tech innovation, paving the way for groundbreaking advancements in autonomous shipbuilding and naval warfare.
