Lost Sausage Dog Valerie Found After 529-Day Adventure in Australia
A runaway sausage dog named Valerie has finally been captured after a 529-day adventure on Kangaroo Island, captivating Australia with her wild escapades among kangaroos, possums, koalas, and penguins.
The miniature dachshund had managed to evade search parties since November 2023, only making rare appearances captured by night-time cameras showing her pink collar.
“Valerie has been safely rescued and is alive and well,” announced the wildlife group responsible for tracking her down on the southern Australian island.
“We are overjoyed that Valerie is finally safe and on her way back to her loving parents,” Kangala Wildlife Rescue shared on social media.
Valerie made her daring escape during a camping trip with her owners, Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock, darting out of a pen and disappearing into the bush.
Despite days of searching the vast 4,400 square kilometre island, the owners had nearly given up hope until Valerie started appearing on video surveillance and locals’ sightings.
Volunteers embarked on a meticulous search for the elusive hound, who seemed to have a knack for avoiding capture from people and cars.
After more than 1,000 hours, over 5,000 kilometres driven, and various traps and lures deployed, volunteers finally managed to catch up with Valerie.
Regular updates on social media kept followers engaged in the search efforts, with glimpses of Valerie visiting trap sites set up with enticing blankets and toys.
Despite their small size, dachshunds like Valerie are known for their adventurous spirit and independence, making them brave and sometimes stubborn hunters.
Valerie’s owner expressed immense gratitude to the volunteers who played a crucial role in reuniting them with their beloved pet, emphasizing the importance of never losing hope when searching for a lost pet.
Valerie’s incredible journey serves as a reminder of the unwavering determination and compassion of those who worked tirelessly to bring her back home.
