The chilling incident involving a man wearing a “Scary Ghost Face” sweatshirt who raped a woman at knifepoint in Queens has led to the arrest of the suspect, Rody R. Morales Cu, by the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit. The 20-year-old was apprehended on Tuesday night in connection to the horrifying attack that took place at 3 a.m. on Friday in Jamaica.
Morales Cu has been charged with first-degree rape and sexual abuse, as stated in a criminal complaint. The victim, a 50-year-old woman, was walking home at the intersection of 162nd Street and 89th Avenue when the assailant approached her from behind, brandishing a knife and instructing her to remain silent.
Despite the threatening circumstances, the victim managed to use her cell phone to contact a family member for help. However, Morales Cu forcibly took the phone, pushed her to the ground, and proceeded to commit the assault. The victim’s relative arrived at the scene and yelled for assistance, causing Morales Cu to flee south on 89th Avenue.
The victim was later admitted to the hospital in stable condition. Morales Cu, who was identified by his distinctive “Scary Ghost Face” sweatshirt, was eventually located and taken into custody. He has no prior arrests in New York City.
During his court appearance, Morales Cu was remanded without bail and is scheduled for another hearing on Friday. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed gratitude towards the survivor for speaking out and commended the swift actions of the NYPD in apprehending the suspect.
It was revealed that Morales Cu is originally from Guatemala, although his immigration status remains unclear. His last known address is in close proximity to the location of the assault. This disturbing incident serves as Morales Cu’s first brush with the law in New York City.
