Haute Couture: Schiaparelli Showcases Fierce Imagination
Haute couture is an exclusive world, with only a few designers belonging to this elite club. This week, two new members joined the ranks at Christian Dior and Chanel, leaving Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry feeling the need to make a statement.
Seeking inspiration, Roseberry embarked on a trip to Rome, where he encountered the Sistine Chapel for the first time. Reflecting on the difference between the static walls and the dynamic ceiling, he was struck by the release and expressiveness of the artwork. This experience fueled his creativity for the latest Schiaparelli collection.
With the recent cancellation of Giambattista Valli’s show and the passing of Giorgio Armani, Roseberry, at 40 years old, now finds himself as a prominent figure in the world of haute couture. Embracing this newfound role, he designed a dramatic collection that not only showcased Schiaparelli’s skilled craftsmen but also his own fierce imagination.
The collection featured unique pieces like “Isabella Blowfish,” a tailleur adorned with spiny spikes in homage to the late couture collector Isabella Blow, and the “Infanta Terribles,” with menacing scorpion tails accentuating the garments. Roseberry’s designs veered away from traditional floral motifs, opting instead for fauna-inspired elements. Feathers, wings, and claws adorned the runway, adding a touch of strangeness to the beauty of his creations.
Roseberry’s avant-garde designs have attracted serious collectors who appreciate the unconventional nature of Schiaparelli’s creations. Teyana Taylor, a daring and extroverted celebrity, has been a prominent client of the brand. She recently wore a reproduction of the stolen Crown Jewels from the Louvre at the Golden Globes, showcasing her love for performance art through fashion.
As Taylor gears up for the Academy Awards, all eyes are on her potential Schiaparelli gown. Roseberry’s bustier gown, designed to mimic a bird in flight, could be a show-stopping choice for the newly minted Oscar nominee.
