The Dunedin City Council has recently implemented standardized variable speed limit times around schools in preparation for the upcoming school year.
Out of the 71 schools in Dunedin, 25 are located within permanent 30kmh speed limit zones, while 46 schools are situated in variable speed limit zones. In these zones, a reduced speed limit of 30kmh will now be enforced from 8am-9.15am and 2.45pm-3.45pm on school days.
Prior to this change, the variable speed limits varied across the city due to differences in school start and finish times. This inconsistency posed a potential confusion for motorists.
According to DCC group manager transport Jeanine Benson, having different variable speed limits for different schools could be confusing for drivers. “Variable school speed limits now apply at consistent times so motorists have one clear rule to follow across Dunedin,” Ms. Benson stated.
To ensure that motorists are informed of the new speed limit times, both digital and static speed limit signs around schools are being updated to reflect these changes. — Allied Media
