Day One of the Schumer Shutdown

The U.S. government found itself in a partial shutdown starting at 12:01 AM on Wednesday, a scenario reminiscent of previous governmental stalemates. The finger-pointing began anew, with accusations flying that Democrats are prioritizing undocumented immigrants over law-abiding citizens.

On Tuesday evening, two different proposals to prevent this governmental impasse met defeat in the Senate.

In a rather predictable turn of events, the Democrats’ latest attempt to reopen the government floundered on Wednesday.

According to critics, it seems that certain Democratic leaders are effectively taking Americans hostage in their push to extend healthcare benefits to those lacking legal status.

The vote concluded with a clear party-line result of 53-47.

The U.S. Senate rejected Democrats’ bill to fund and reopen the government in a 47-53 vote.

Later that same day, Senate Democrats thwarted a Republican-backed initiative to secure funding for the government, registering a vote of 55-45 against reopening.

Ahead of the votes, Vice President JD Vance did not pull any punches in his critique of the Democrats.

“In their initial proposal, the first thing that they proposed to reopen the government was to allocate funds for healthcare benefits for undocumented immigrants,” Vance stated. “This isn’t something we fabricated; it’s explicitly stated in their bill. It’s absurd for them to distance themselves from it now,” he concluded.
