Science Under Fire in Washington

The Trump administration’s continued attacks on science and scientific integrity have reached new heights in recent weeks. The administration is using political interference to suppress science, co-opt scientific language, and undermine the scientific process in an effort to advance its political goals.

In the past month alone, there have been 66 potential attacks on scientists, their work, and science-based policies in the federal government, bringing the total since Inauguration Day to a staggering 418. This unprecedented pace and scale of attacks on science are alarming and pose a significant threat to the integrity of scientific research.

One of the most concerning developments is a recent executive order signed by President Trump that directs federal agencies to roll back scientific integrity policies to weaken or eliminate them. The order replaces these policies with the administration’s views on how science should be used in government decision-making, effectively undermining the independence and integrity of scientific research.

The executive order also gives political appointees oversight over scientific integrity policies and violations, further politicizing the scientific process and compromising the validity of scientific research. This blatant interference in the scientific process puts public health, environmental safety, and national security at risk.

The administration’s efforts to co-opt science and manipulate scientific evidence for political gain are a dangerous precedent that must be challenged. The independence of scientific research must be protected to ensure that policy decisions are based on the best available science and not on political agendas.

It is essential that scientists, policymakers, and the public stand up against these attacks on science and defend the integrity of scientific research. The future of evidence-based decision-making and the credibility of scientific research depend on our collective efforts to protect the independence of science from political interference. Under President Trump’s new Executive Order on federal science, any political officials overseeing scientific integrity policies and enforcement would also need to pass a “loyalty test.” This requirement has raised concerns about the independence of federal science and the potential for political interference.

In the broader context of the Trump administration’s anti-science actions, such as disregarding scientific evidence on issues like chemical safety, vaccination, and climate change, this loyalty test adds another layer of worry. It signals a troubling trend towards prioritizing political allegiance over scientific integrity.

One recent example of this trend is the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) release of the “Make American Healthy Again” (MAHA) report. While the report covers a range of health topics, including children’s diets, toxic chemical exposure, and vaccine safety, experts have raised serious doubts about its scientific rigor.

Critics have pointed out methodological flaws in the report, conflicts of interest among its authors, and misinterpretation of scientific studies to support its conclusions. The inclusion of fake citations and potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the report’s development further call into question its credibility and validity.

The use of AI in scientific research can introduce bias and inaccuracies, leading to unreliable conclusions. In the case of the MAHA report, the reliance on AI-generated text raises concerns about the accuracy of its findings and recommendations.

Moreover, the Trump administration’s track record of politicizing scientific issues, such as vaccine safety and neurodevelopmental disorders, adds to the skepticism surrounding the MAHA report. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his team have been accused of promoting anti-science beliefs and using questionable scientific practices to shape national policy.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for advocates of scientific integrity to remain vigilant and proactive. Initiatives like the Scientific Integrity (SI) Act, which aims to protect federal scientists from political interference, and campaigns like “Save Science Save Lives” provide avenues for concerned individuals to take action.
