The tragic death of Alex Pretti and the subsequent misinformation spread by President Trump and his allies serve as a stark reminder of the threat authoritarianism poses to our democracy. The immediate blame placed on Pretti, a nurse at a VA hospital, in an attempt to manipulate the public perception is a classic tactic of authoritarian regimes. By discrediting the victim and labeling him as a domestic terrorist, the administration aims to suppress any dissent against their unlawful actions.

Authoritarianism thrives by gradually dismantling democratic institutions and norms. The concentration of power in the executive branch, with the passive approval of Congress and the partisan Supreme Court, is a troubling sign of the authoritarian turn the United States has taken. However, there is hope in the resistance against authoritarianism, and scientists have a crucial role to play in defending democracy.

According to a recent poll, 77% of Americans trust scientists to act in the public interest, making them one of the most trusted groups in society. Science flourishes in a democratic environment that values the pursuit of truth. The attacks on science under the current administration, such as funding cuts for research and intimidation of scientists, pose a threat not only to scientific integrity but also to democracy itself. Scientists must leverage the public trust placed in them to protect their communities and country.

To combat authoritarianism, individuals can take simple yet effective actions. Speaking out against propaganda and state-sponsored violence is essential in upholding democratic values. Challenging authoritarian rhetoric, engaging with media, and writing op-eds can help counter the spread of misinformation. Building community and showing up at rallies, marches, and meetings can amplify the collective voice against authoritarianism. Holding elected leaders accountable and defending the integrity of elections are crucial steps in safeguarding democracy.

Mutual aid, as an act of resistance, fosters solidarity and counters fear by promoting networks of care and support within communities. By exchanging resources and services, mutual aid empowers individuals and reduces reliance on coercive institutions. Engaging in mutual aid initiatives and supporting community needs can strengthen the fabric of society in the face of authoritarian threats.

In the face of authoritarianism, resistance is an act of hope. Scholars emphasize that complacency poses a greater danger than repression in the fight against authoritarian regimes. It is imperative for scientists to speak out against state-sanctioned violence, advocate for evidence-based policies, and engage with their communities to defend democracy. By standing together and upholding democratic values, we can confront the challenges posed by authoritarianism and protect the foundations of our society.
