With no need to seek re-election, Donald Trump’s second term has been marked by a notable disregard, and at times clear contempt, toward the priorities and concerns of the American public.
His recent remarks indicating indifference to the financial struggles of Americans have become pivotal moments in the ongoing midterm elections. Given the weight of these statements and their ensuing impact, it was expected that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent would be questioned about them during his testimony before the House concerning Treasury Department oversight.
During the session, Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) directly questioned Bessent, asking, “Do you agree with President Trump that you also do not care about Americans’ financial situations?”
Bessent replied by posing a seemingly unrelated question, “Uh, Congresswoman, who was the president during World War I?”
Chu, seeking clarity, asked, “Are you refusing to answer my question?”
Bessent reiterated his query, “No, I’m asking, who was the president during World War I?”
To which Rep. Chu responded, “I don’t know, but clearly you are not answering my question.”
