Scott Speedman has been cast in the title role for ABC’s upcoming pilot, “RJ Decker,” based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel “Double Whammy.” The one-hour drama pilot follows RJ Decker, a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts a new life as a private investigator in the crime-filled world of South Florida. Teaming up with his journalist ex, her police detective wife, and a mysterious benefactor from his past, RJ takes on cases ranging from odd to bizarre.
Speedman’s involvement in “RJ Decker” keeps him in the ABC family, where he has been recurring on “Grey’s Anatomy” since its 18th season. His recent TV credits include roles in “Teacup” on Peacock, “You” on Netflix, and TNT’s “Animal Kingdom.” Speedman rose to fame with his role in “Felicity” and has appeared in films like the “Underworld” franchise, “The Strangers,” and “XXX: State of the Union.”
The pilot is written and executive produced by Rob Doherty, with Paul McGuigan directing and executive producing. Carl Hiaasen, the author of the original novel, serves as an executive producer alongside Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman of Timberman/Beverly Productions. 20th Television is the studio behind the project.
This adaptation of Hiaasen’s work is part of a recent trend, with Apple TV+ currently airing “Bad Monkey” starring Vince Vaughn, based on another Hiaasen novel. The show has been renewed for a second season, while another Hiaasen adaptation, “Skinny Dip,” is in development at Max with Bill Lawrence, Adam Horowitz, and Edward Kitsis.
Speedman’s casting was first reported by Deadline, confirming his involvement in the exciting new project. Stay tuned for more updates on “RJ Decker” and Speedman’s portrayal of the intriguing lead character.
