Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar Calls for Sir Keir Starmer’s Resignation
Amidst a deepening crisis engulfing his premiership, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has made a bold call for UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to resign. Sarwar, who has previously been viewed as a Starmer ally, is now the most senior Labour figure to publicly demand Starmer’s departure.
Speaking out on the matter, Sarwar emphasized that “the leadership in Downing Street has to change,” acknowledging that his intervention was not made lightly but that his primary loyalty lies with Scotland.
As Sarwar made his stance clear, a Downing Street spokesperson responded by affirming Starmer’s “clear five-year mandate from the British people to deliver change,” indicating that the prime minister intends to fulfill this mandate.
However, the Labour Party is facing expectations of poor performance in upcoming elections in Scotland, Wales, London, and various parts of England. Initially hopeful for victory in the Scottish elections, Labour’s prospects have been overshadowed by Starmer’s waning popularity.
Sarwar emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “In three months we have an election that must be about one thing and one thing only: Scotland.” He further highlighted that the leadership in Downing Street has become a significant distraction.
Prior to Sarwar’s statement, Starmer’s director of communications Tim Allan resigned amidst a scandal surrounding the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson as US ambassador. Additionally, former Number 10 chief of staff Morgan McSweeney stepped down, taking full responsibility for advising the prime minister on Mandelson’s appointment.
With mounting pressure and calls for his resignation, including from within his own party, Starmer is set to address Labour MPs on Monday evening in an effort to solidify his position and address the growing concerns within the party.
