On Wednesday, news broke of a peculiar incident involving an NYPD detective who managed to infiltrate the Ryder Cup under the pretense of being part of President Trump’s security detail. This was brought to light by a report.

Detective Melvin Eng, donned in full tactical gear, successfully secured his entry by claiming to be affiliated with federal security. According to reports from The New York Post, Eng even went so far as to assure bystanders of his official capacity with the feds.

However, his undercover operation hit a snag when he reportedly dropped his magazine, which prompted swift ejection from the event.

As a result of this egregiously bold but ill-fated attempt, Detective Eng has been placed on suspension without pay.

The absence of President Trump on that particular day seems to have been pivotal. According to the Secret Service, their agents were not present at the Ryder Cup since Trump was not in attendance.

“The NYPD officer in full tactical gear sneaked into the Ryder Cup tournament by saying he was part of a security team on Friday, a day Trump was not at the golf course — so it did not involve the Secret Service at all,” reported Susan Crabtree from RealClearPolitics on Thursday.

In an official statement, the Secret Service clarified the situation surrounding the Ryder Cup incident:

“There are inaccurate reports in the press and on social media of an off-duty member of law enforcement attending the Ryder Cup during the President’s visit on Friday, Sept. 26. After a review by the New York State Police and the NYPD, it was determined this individual attended the Ryder Cup but not when it was under the purview of the U.S. Secret Service. We would refer any follow-up inquiries to the New York State Police.”

CORRECTION: The off-duty NYPD officer who sneaked into the Ryder Cup tournament did not implicate the @SecretService in any way because Pres. Trump was not there the day that happened.
